Golden, Yet Concise - Good deeds wipe off Sins
In the Name of Allah, the Most
Gracious, the Most Merciful
The best Praises and Thanks
deservedly belong to Allah SWA, the Lord of the entire Universe. He is the Most
High and Praised shall He remain in all situations. He is the Possessor of
great bounties and the Owner of unfathomable wisdom. We testify that there is
no deity who deserves to be worshipped except Him and that Muhammad SAW is His
Prophet and Messenger. May the Blessings, Peace and Salutations of Allah be
upon the Noble Prophet SAW, his household, his companions, and his nation till
the day when there shall be no shade except the shade of the Most Merciful. May
Allah put us under His shade on the Day of Judgment. Aameen.
Alhamdu-liLlah, Allah has brought us
this far, in our previous post we talked a lot about the admonishing of the
Prophet SAW to Muadh RA in which he SAW begun with, “Fear Allah wherever you
are…” we said a lot about it based on the explanations of Duktuur Shaykh
Sulayman ar-Ruhayliyy may Allah’s Protection be upon him. In shaa Allah, in
today’s post and subsequent discussions, we shall base our discussions on the
second part of the admonishment, “and follow your bad deeds with good ones so
they may wipe them off…” This brings us to our topic, ‘Good Deeds wipe off
Sins’
The good deeds that are used to wipe
away our sins are known as Kaffaara (Kaffaaraats plural)/expiations. Thus,
whenever you come across the word kaffaara or kaffaraats, the one uttering it
is referring to actions or good deeds that wipe away our sins. There are two
types of good deeds that wipe away our sins. The first of them is known as
Restricted Good deeds and the other is known, obviously, as Unrestricted Good
deeds. In shaa Allah, the explanation for both types shall be made known as we
progress in our discussions. May Allah Forgive us and Guide us.
When we mention restricted
expiation, these are expiations that occur due to a reason. They are only
performed or undertaken due to a certain action. Thus, whenever the reason for
the expiation is found, the expiation itself must follow in order to remove
that reason, which is the sin. Some of the scholars have viewed that these
restricted expiations do not wipe of the sins of a person except that it is
combined with Tawbah/repentance. Sincere Repentance.
From amongst the accurate statements
of the scholars is that, expiations or actions that are performed as expiations
for sins serve as protections before the sin occurs and they also remove the
sins after they have occurred.
Examples of these expiations, as
Shaykh al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah RA put it, is the expiations for the one who has
sexual intercourse during the day in the month of Ramadan and then it becomes
compulsory upon him to offer expiation for his sins in the form of freeing a
slave and if he is unable to do so then he should fast for two months
continuously and if he is unable to do so then he should feed sixty poor
people. If he does this then it wipes away the sin which he has committed and
it will be left with him making up for the day he committed the act. And the
correct view of the scholars is that he has to pay or make up for the day he
committed the sin.
Alhamdu-liLlah we shall end our
discussion here and in shaa Allah in our next session we shall begin by looking
at the aftermath of kaffaarah.
May Allah Forgive us our sins and
Have mercy on us and our parents and the Muslims who are in their graves. May
Allah bless our scholars and protect them for us and grant all of us Jannah.
Let us all say a supplication for our brother Muhammad Amin who has contributed
tremendously in this striving of ours. May Allah bless him abundantly. Aameen.
